Gay Rights Activist Gives Kindergarten Children Pledge Cards Vowing To Support Homosexuals

November 1st 2008 16:41
A California school system refuses to say what action, if any, it will take after it received complaints about a kindergarten teacher who encouraged her students to sign "pledge cards" in support of gays.

During a celebration of National Ally Week, Tara Miller, a teacher at the Faith Ringgold School of Arts and Science in Hayward, Calif., passed out cards produced by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network to her class of kindergartners.

The cards asked signers to be "an ally" and to pledge to "not use anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) language or slurs; intervene, when I feel I can, in situations where others are using anti-LGBT language or harassing other students and actively support safer schools efforts."

The school has acknowledged that the exercise was not appropriate for kindergartners.

School Clams Up on 'Gay' Pledge Cards Given to Kindergartners

/off hand comment: If you seriously think the LGBT organization was in the right for doing this then you are as far to the left as those who are for proposition 8 are on the right, and no, it doesn't make you any better.

I guess they'll soon decide that having kindergarten students sign pledge cards vowing they will study hard will yield productive results.

I think it can do no harm to send young kids a positive message about all people. What's with having FOX News as a source?

LGBT is not even near 'all people'. It would be just as wrong to get them to sign pledge cards pledging they will support Christians.

What's with having FOX News as a source?

It was where I read it, feel free to discredit it.

Okay Ahmed. It's a good idea to send young kids a positive message about LGBTs. I bet a fair percentage of those kids would have already heard adults using homophobic insults, whether it's on the TV or at home. And if they haven't, they're bound to. Why? Because nobody walked up to our generation and suggested that discrimination against a person on the grounds of their sexual orientation should not be happening. The organisation was trying to protect these impressionable young people from other people's hate, and instill the kind of behaviour which would dramatically increase acceptance of LGBTs, and I admire that.

Fair enough about the source, but if it was me I would have found the corresponding article on CNN or BBC and linked that instead.
