During the Middle Ages people were generelly happy, very happy, they didn't have an overbearing government forcing medical treatment onto them and they could carry weapons freely wherever they went.
Their average lifespan of about 40 years didn't do much to to put them off living the life. They were, after all, happy with their lack of healthcare and didn't mind that they depended on witch doctors who could not be held accountable to their behaviour. That is of course if they kept mostly to themselves and didn't get into any sort of trouble with the church in which case they'd be dumped in the nearest lake.
So the people were happy and healthy. Yes they were. As they say, freedom before death, or the plague as the case may be.
